As seen in this article, a topic for hot debate is how dammed water in California's severe drought zone is being shared with salmon. Despite Californian's desperate need for water water normally used for farming is being shared in order to avoid a gill rot disease that is easily contractable in warm, low water and avoid a large-scale fish die off such as the tragedy of 2002. This also causes salmon populations to drops and directly effects three tribes that are dependent on salmon and salmon harvesting but have had to restrain due to the lack of reproduction.
